About This Unit

When studying pure mathematics at AS and A2 level you will be extending your knowledge of such topics as algebra and trigonometry as well as learning some brand new ideas such as calculus. While many of the ideas you will meet in pure mathematics are interesting in their own right, they also serve as an important foundation for other branches of mathematics, especially mechanics and statistics.

  1. Chapter 1 The Binomial and Poisson Distributions (S2) In this session, you will learn about The Binomial and Poisson Distributions, one of the 4 topics you need to be knowledgeable in to master the Unit S2 paper in Mathematics. After completing this session, you will be able to know when a binomial distribution is a suitable model for a practical situation, know how to calculate probabilities using a binomial distribution, know how to use tables to find cumulative binomial probabilities, know when a Poisson distribution is a suitable model to use, know how to calculate probabilities using a Poisson distribution, know how to use tables of a cumulative frequency distribution of a Poisson, as well as know how and when to use the Poisson distribution as an approximation to the binomial distribution.

  2. Chapter 2 Continuous Random Variables (S2) In this session, you will learn about Continuous Random Variables, one of the 4 topics you need to be knowledgeable in to master the Unit S2 paper in Mathematics. After completing this session, you will be able to decide whether something can be a probability density function, be able to find the cumulative distribution function given the probability density function, be able to find the probability density function given the cumulative distribution function, be able to find the mean and variance of a random variable using its probability density function, as well as be able to find the mode and median of a random variable using its probability density function.

  3. Chapter 3 Continuous Distributions (S2) In this session, you will learn about Continuous Distributions, one of the 4 topics you need to be knowledgeable in to master the Unit S2 paper in Mathematics. After completing this session, you will be able to decide when to use the continuous uniform distribution, be able to derive the mean, variance, and cumulative distribution function of a continuous uniform distribution, be able to use the formulae for the mean, variance and cumulative distribution function of a continuous uniform distribution, know when and how to apply a continuity correction, know how to approximate a binomial distribution with a normal distribution, as well as know how to approximate a Poisson distribution with a normal distribution.

  4. Chapter 4 Hypothesis Tests (S2) In this session, you will learn about Hypothesis Tests, one of the 4 topics you need to be knowledgeable in to master the Unit S2 paper in Mathematics. After completing this session, you will be able to understand what is meant by a hypothesis and hypothesis test, be able to form null and alternative hypotheses for binomial or Poisson distributions, understand when to use one and two-tailed tests, understand what is meant by a critical region, know what is meant by a significance level, as well as be able to find critical regions for binomial and Poisson distributions.
