About This Unit

When studying pure mathematics at AS and A2 level you will be extending your knowledge of such topics as algebra and trigonometry as well as learning some brand new ideas such as calculus. While many of the ideas you will meet in pure mathematics are interesting in their own right, they also serve as an important foundation for other branches of mathematics, especially mechanics and statistics.

  1. Chapter 1 Further Kinematics (M3) In this session, you will learn about Further Kinematics, one of the 5 topics you need to be knowledgeable in to master the Unit M3 paper. After completing this session, you will be able to solve problems involving motion in a straight line when acceleration varies with time and solve problems involving motion in a straight line when acceleration varies with displacement.

  2. Chapter 2 Elastic Strings and Springs (M3) In this session, you will learn about Elastic Strings and Springs, one of the 5 topics you need to be knowledgeable in to master the Unit M3 paper. After completing this session, you will be able use Hooke's law and solve problems involving elastic strings and springs, find the elastic energy stored in an elastic string or spring, solve problems involving the use of the conservation of energy principle, as well as solve problems involving the use of the work-energy principle.

  3. Chapter 3 Further Dynamics (M3) In this session, you will learn about Dynamics, one of the 5 topics you need to be knowledgeable in to master the Unit M3 paper. After completing this session, you will be able to solve problems involving the motion of a particle in a straight line when the force is expressed as a function of either time or distance, solve problems about a particle moving away from or towards the Earth under the action of the Earth's gravitational force, model an object oscillating about a fixed point with simple harmonic motion (S.H.M.), as well as investigate the motion of a particle which is attached to the end of an elastic string or spring and is set in motion.

  4. Chapter 4 Motion in a Circle (M3) In this session, you will learn about Motion in a Circle, one of the 5 topics you need to be knowledgeable in to master the Unit M3 paper. After completing this session, you will be able to find the forces acting on an object moving in a horizontal or vertical circle, determine whether an object will follow a circular path, as well as solve problems relating to motion in vertical or horizontal circles.

  5. Chapter 5 Statics of Rigid Bodies (M3) In this session, you will learn about Statics of Rigid Bodies, one of the 5 topics you need to be knowledgeable in to master the Unit M3 paper. After completing this session, you will be able to use calculus to find the centre of mass of a uniform plane lamina, find the centre of mass of a uniform solid body, consider simple cases of equilibrium of rigid bodies, as well as determine whether a body is about to slip or is about to topple.
